Why Create a Website about the 2017 Women’s March?

On January 21, 2017 the largest peaceful protest to date took place in towns and cities around the world in reaction to the election of Donald J. Trump as the 45th president of the United States. Women, men and children gathered in Washington, DC and other locations to hold signs and hear speakers talk about the need to protect our inherent human rights that Trump was threatening to attack. The purpose of a website dedicated to the 2017 Women’s March is to document and preserve the memories of this global, peaceful event. The preservation of memories from the 2017 Women’s March is important for future generations to learn about the past and the impact it had on society.

This website was modeled on the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media’s digital archival website about the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. Their goal was preserve pictures and memories from user contributions’ first hand account as witnesses to history. I organized the 2017 Women’s March website in a similar fashion, for participants to post their own stories, photographs and videos in order to create a document that will save memories before they are forgotten. The website, developed on the Omeka open source platform, utilizes several plugins to assist users with content contributions.  My website will be evaluated from the users who will (hopefully!) contribute items, and offer feedback on how it can be improved.
