Website Progress – 3

2017 Women’s March Website

One of my challenges with the website has to do with the overall look and layout. I used Canva, a platform for making flyers, posters, and other visual aids, to create a banner that said, “2017 Women’s March.” Under “appearances,” I added the image as the logo. But it was so tiny! I was using the theme Center Row, but could not figure out how to enlarge the banner title or make it centered. In consultation with Dr. Alyssa Fahringer, Digital Scholarship librarian at George Mason University, I changed my theme from Center Row to Freedom, which seems to provide a better layout for my purposes.

After downloading and applying the new Freedom theme layout, I added a picture from the Women’s March in Washington, DC, which is located just underneath the website tabs, then added a picture of the official Women’s March poster to the top left. I also added additional text to the exhibit “Pink Pussy Hats.”

Finally, I thought I should check to see if the “contribution” plugin actually works, so I tried it by adding a picture. When I went back to the administrative page to see if the item had been added, I discovered that I needed to add a security detail. Omeka provided a link to Google’s security protection reCAPTCHA, which gives a few different options for preventing bots from spamming websites. I chose the “check this box” version. Hopefully it will provide enough security for my website needs.

My next challenge is to figure out how to apply the geolocation plugin and start adding locations of the Women’s Marches. I am hoping that users will be able to add their own, but I am not sure of that yet. I also need to figure out how to configure the downloaded YouTube plugin. And next steps include continuing to work on the overall layout and whether to keep all the existing exhibits, or to delete or combine a few together.
