New Technologies

The types of digital public history works being created today have been influenced by recent technological innovations. These innovations have had an impact on digital applications, which in turn has allowed public history to expand its reach into a much wider audience and global community.

The introduction of the World Wide Web, or broadband, connected people around the world, giving us access to information more quickly. With the development of portable, mobile devices, accessing and sharing information has exploded, with help from social media platforms. These technological advances have changed our methods of communication, and our focus of attention.

Because of both the internet and mobile devices, public historians have expanded beyond physical spaces to reach their audiences and work collaboratively with online communities. Public historians are able to utilize digital platforms to create interactive websites, whereby the community can provide feedback, ask questions, and contribute to the content on the website by sharing pictures and stories for preservation of memories of important events. Public historians can also create apps for use in conjunction with websites. They can offer audio tours of physical, geographic locations, such as historic neighborhoods, military battlefields, or other types of self guided tours. Podcasts allow humanities scholars opportunities that they are unable to do in other mediums. With the number of people globally who have and use a personal phone, they now have the ability to listen to a plethora of podcasts, based on personal interests. In addition to the ease of accessibility, listening to podcasts is either free, or low cost, which also helps humanities scholars share knowledge and information to a broader base. They can also reach more marginalized and diverse groups of communities, outside of the traditional academic setting. As a method of communication, by building on the continuity of the show’s structure, music used, and the tonal quality of voices, it can create a level of intimacy where listeners feel a real connection to the hosts.

The role of the public historian has evolved in conjunction with the evolution of technological advances in this Information Age. Using digital platforms, more easily accessible on mobile devices, the public historian can now communicate and collaborate with people around the world.
