A Definition of Digital Humanities

Digital humanities (DH) can be defined as the scholarly endeavor whereby, through collaboration between various fields within the study of the human past, multimedia information is created to disseminate and share with the general public through electronic platforms. These endeavors are for preservation, analysis, research and teaching purposes. In addition, DH work must be inclusive of all types of people in order to fully capture all aspects of the human record.

Defining and explaining the work involved in Digital Humanities (DH) is challenging. Does it mean a description of the processes involved, the computer hardware used in the creation of knowledge to share, or should it describe who is doing the work of building multimedia, multi-sensory digital platforms?

Using digital tools and electronic technology to create shareable information moves beyond traditional text to include images, both still and moving, 3-D graphics, audio and more. This multimedia approach provides a more thorough and rich experience to aid in our collective understanding of the human story.

Because DH is more than text, or beyond text, it is necessary to expand the work involved in creation to include those more familiar with using computing tools. Collaborative efforts are crucial in capturing the multidimensional stories. Interdisciplinary sharing includes archivists, librarians, anthropologists, historians, but also computer technicians familiar with GIS, sound engineering, mapping, and videography. As technology continues to evolve, perhaps other fields will be included in collaboration to create new DH stories.

Traditionally, an overwhelming majority of recorded, researched, studied and shared human stories have come from a Western, colonial, male perspective. To fully learn about all of humanity, DH work of preserving, analyzing and sharing our stories must be inclusive of all genders, races, nationalities, languages, and ages.
